I believe those older ones were actually recalled because of rust-proofing issues on the frame causing premature failure.

They were. My boss called me out to look at his Tacoma back in '07-'08 or so because I've done a lot of rust repair on my projects. I could put my arm through the holes in the frame, and the truck was a 2001.

yes, 2001-2003 Tacoma's and Tundras Also another recall up to 2005 for spare tire brackets.

I remember that after a few months of secretly putting salt compresses on the frame my friends dad was able to get Toyota to buy back his beater 2WD '96 for something like $6k.
